How Much TV is Too Much?

We do not watch much TV. I would be stretching it to say we watch an hour a week. We literally go for days without turning the TV on. We just got cable a few months ago for the first time in four years; I guess we just got out of the habit of watching. Ella is not a TV watcher at all. She loves to watch "Baby Signing Time" DVDs, but that is about it (I highly recommend it for learning baby signing skills).

This morning Ella asked for "Bob" (Veggie Tales). I thought she wanted to listen to a CD (our normal "Bob" routine), but she wanted to watch a DVD. Weird! We rarely watch VT DVDs with her -- I think maybe once we watched one. She lasted about 10 minutes and now she is outside with her sidewalk chalk. I will take 10 minutes a day!

4 Thoughts From Others:

I am asking myself that too. Kate hardly ever watched TV until this year. At first, it was just one video a day. But now that she knows how to operate the DVD player, and I know how much peace it can buy me, it can be more challenging to set limits. I'm thinking I probably should though, or she'll be one of those 6 year olds who watches 4 hours of TV a day!

Beth loves the pix, but she can't comment ;)

It's funny how they pick up on things. Noah has never seen Barney or Bob the Builder yet he can sing the "I Love You" song and knows everyone in Bob's work crew. Christopher and I are convinced that kids just come with some things hard wired in...

Erin -- I hear you! I "got" Sarah when she was 3.5 and man, it was so nice to park her in front of something and get 30 minutes to finish what needed to be done! I am sure that time will come with Ella too. And she ALREADY turns on the DVD player for me (but doesn't know how to push start).

Steph -- that is too funny! We walked by a bike today with a baby carriage thing on the back and Ella said "bike" and "baby". But we have NEVER seen one of those with a kid in it! I have no idea how they pick up on things.

Did B learn the Barney song at church or school? And maybe the kids taught him the names of Bob as well. It's scary what kids learn from other kids!
